Bueno, hoy es el día de los resultados y han sido puntuales. La competencia fue dura, fuimos casi 1000 candidatos sólo para las becas en Europa y sólo un 6% de éstos iban a conseguirlo. Estoy más o menos en el 10% mejor de esos 1000 pero eso no ha sido suficiente aunque me siento satisfecho por hasta dónde ha llegado mi candidatura.
Ésto no es un fracaso ya que el nivel era muy bueno, la conclusión es que había unos cuantos que tenían un proyecto más solido que el mío o con menor riesgo.

Beca La Caixa 2012: La entrevista
Siguiendo con el tema principal del blog, "The long road" en este post voy a hablar de la entrevista a la que he asistido hoy en el marco de las becas La Caixa.
Después de superar la preselección el departamento de becas avisa a todos los candidatos del día y hora de la entrevista, que es la última fase del programa.
Este año para el programa de becas de postgrado en Europa hemos sido 928 candidatos en la preselección de los cuales 255 han pasado a la fase de entrevistas. Eso es un 27,5%.
En Barcelona las entrevistas se han hecho en el complejo de las torres La Caixa y había 4 o 5 tribunales distintos entrevistando en paralelo. Algo curioso es que prácticamente no me he cruzado con otros candidatos, sólo 2, el de antes y el de después ya que los "timings" se llevan bastante estríctamente. Los tribunales están organizados por temas (cientifico-técnico, ciencias de la salud, etc.) y cada aspirante es entrevistado por el tribunal que se parezca más a su perfil. Puede ser que si eres de ingeniería te toque un tribunal en el que hay un físico, un matemático o un ingeniero; no todos los miembros son de la misma especialidad. En mi caso el tribunal estaba formado por 5 personas siendo al menos una de ellas de parte de La Caixa.
Los miembros del tribunal no se presentan ni dicen quien es quien, así que realmente uno no sabe muy bien con quien está hablando aunque a los dos minutos ya se puede hacer una idea. El motivo de esto es que no hay tiempo aparte de que realmente no hace falta.
Cuando he entrado en la sala he visto a todos los miembros ya sentados alrededor de una mesa alargada y el asiento que me esperaba estaba en el extremo de la mesa más próximo a la puerta. Sin que aún me hubieran dicho nada, a primera vista el tribunal impone un poco durante los primeros segundos ya que visiblemente se trata de gente que tiene mucha experiencia en la universidad y si quisieran podrían machacarme. Sin embargo al empezar a hablar la cosa ha cambiado.
La entrevista ha resultado ser muy cómoda y distendida, desde el primer momento todo el tribunal ha mostrado interés en el tema de mi proyecto y en mi caso la mitad de la entrevista ha sido en inglés y la otra mitad en español. De los cinco miembros he podido distinguir claramente a un físico inglés y a un ingeniero, los demás profesores universitarios no tengo muy claro de qué especialidad eran. Obviamente ha habido alguna pregunta técnica con ánimo de ver si sabia de lo que estaba hablando y me han pedido que dijera mi opinión sobre un tema relacionado. En mi caso solo el profesor inglés ha hecho una crítica argumentando que lo que quiero hacer es muy especializado y le preocupaban las posibilidades de que obtuviera un empleo después de acabar los estudios, he intentado defenderme pero ahí su opinión era firme y debo darle la razón parcialmente en este punto.
En total 20 minutos de entrevista tranquila, con buenas caras y sin prisas pero sin pausa.
Tengo constancia de que esto no siempre es así ya que en otros años algunos tribunales han optado por un modelo de entrevista agresiva.
Los resultados se sabrán el 24 de abril, así que ahora toca esperar.

¡Preseleccionado para la beca!

Hoy me han notificado que mi solicitud para la beca "La Caixa" ha sido preseleccionada, lo que significa que he pasado el corte más grande del proceso. El siguiente paso será la entrevista personal y para ello me enviaran los detalles próximamente.
Hoy también he enviado los correos a los profesores que van a apoyar mi candidatura al postgrado de Southampton para darles detalles de los puntos importantes. Es un proceso largo también y me llevara un tiempo más completar la solicitud para la universidad pero voy avanzando.

Today I've been notified that my aplication for the grant "La Caixa" has been chosen, which means that I've passed the greatest cut of the whole process. The next step is a personal interview and they will send me the details soon.
I have already sent the mails to those who will support my application to the postgraduate course in Southampton to give them the details about the important points. It's a long process too and it will take me more time to complete the new application for the University.

Since living in UK
for a whole year without any income is going to be tough I decided to apply for
a scholarship to raise funds. The point is that this scholarship would cover
all the university fees plus a monthly income for living costs which is fantastic.
However there is a bad side of course; the application process is long and
requires referees. Moreover there are lots of candidates that apply for this
scholarship.
Anyone said that
this was going to be easy.
So here I am,
looking for supporters. By today I have sent several requests to former
university teachers I had in my college times to support this project. Two of
them have already agreed to send recommendation letters and I really appreciate
it. I would like to have two more contacts available just in case.
Nowadays, the application
process is managed by a web based tool that tells you what you need to
complete, which documents are needed and also runs the recommendation letters
stuff. There are lots of details to provide such as personal details,
university degrees, language certificates, where have you worked, future plans,
motivation letters and more.
Furthermore the
university has also its own application process which has 14 sections,
yay!! xxDDDD. I have to say that I’m
applying for a Master’s degree that has an income of only 8 new students a year!!
It is obvious that it’s going to be difficult to enter there thus I need a plan
B if I am rejected. In the same university they have a similar degree with an income
of 20 students per year and this one is going to be my alternative (as pilots
would say). Sincerely I’m more likely to land at the alternative than in the main
destination. What it’s spinning my head is how I can deal with two different
plans in the application process. Should I create two different applications? I’ll
find out.

IELTS results

Finally I got my IELTS score.
Surprisingly the worst section has been the writing with a 6.5 then the speaking with a 7.0 and the best parts were the listening and the reading with 7.5 and 8.5 respectively. This means an overall band 7.5 for the IELTS test which means that it's enough for the university ... yay!!! mission accomplished xD.
The next step is requesting recommendation letters.

Sorprendentemente la peor sección ha sido el writing con un 6.5 seguido del speaking con un 7.0 y las mejores partes el listening y el reading con un 7.5 y un 8.5 respectivamente. For my english-speaking friends. Part 2
In this part I'll translate a summary of the second post which was written in Catalan, so here we go!
The beginning of the road.
All the roads have a beginning and a purpose. As I said in part 1, the purpose is to spend a year in England studying a MSc degree in the university. Further goals will be defined once I get there.
Obviously, someone needs to have a rough idea about what he/she wants to study and which university is the first in his/her list. In my case, I'm thinking about an MSc degree in Aerodynamics in the University of Southampton. Apparently, it seems to be a good university and it has a good position in the World University Rankings, being the number 55 of the world for engineering topics (QS technical ranking). I know that it isn't the MIT but I think that it is not bad whatsoever. Although this kind of rankings are not the wholly truth, they're made following a set of criteria that make them to become a relevant reference.
The first step to do the things correctly is to do a research, therefore I searched over the internet for a time, I composed e-mails and I looked for opinions and critics from other people that had done similar projects and where they had eventually ended up.
Most English universities have a set of requirements in order to be eligible to study there. Among them there is one which is common everywhere, an English language certificate. (CAE, CPE, IELTS ...).
IELTS is an English exam similar to the American TOEFL. It isn't defined for a particular level but it tries to give you a score according to the level you showed in your test. So there isn't a pass mark actually. This test is divided in four parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The University of Southampton requires a global score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each part.
I chose IELTS for several reasons; I hadn't enough time to do the CAE (it takes more than 2 months to know the score); IELTS has an academic version which is specific for this purpose, by this way the exam is more restricted; the scores in the IELTS are released 2 weeks after the test and it only takes 3 hours to do the complete exam.
Therefore, with a clear "mission statement" (as space mission designers would say), I began to prepare for the IELTS. I spent a week preparing the exam by my own and recalling what I had learnt at ELC with Alex (my former teacher). Then I signed up for an IELTS training course at the British Council in Barcelona. The training course was superb, I would recommend it.
Before the test I thought that the reading and writing parts were the most potentially problematic parts because of the time available to do them. As the day before we did a mock speaking test I was completely sure that the speaking was not going to be a problem.
Finally I took the test in November 19th. First the listening, reading and writing without any breaks. Oh dear, it was perfect. Then I had to go to the British Council for the speaking part, and here the things went nasty. I entered the test room full of confidence since the day before I did a freakin' awesome speaking mock test, the test began and I found myself trying to speak about a topic which I had nothing to say about. Oh s**t!! In a speaking test I'm supposed to speak so I had to say something and I started to mess it up xxxDDD. At the beginning of part 2 I began to do small grammatical mistakes, which I noticed and I tried to fix them, and then everything went worse; incorrect verbal tenses and so on. I don't know if it was as bad as I'm describing it, we'll see.
To make things worse, it's not enough to have a good overall score since I need a minimum of 6.0 in each part, so every single part of the test is as important as the others. Thus, if I have brilliant scores in all the parts but a 5.5 in the speaking, I'm screwed and I would have to repeat the full test. Well, these are the rules of the game and I agreed with them.
Tomorrow I will know the scores and I could either be in cloud nine or in the deep hell. (Quite a bit exaggerated)

For my english-speaking friends. Part 1
Since I've seen in facebook that some people who I met abroad visited this blog, I'm going to write some posts in english from time to time. As a result I'm glad to welcome you to an awesome three mixed languages blog, xxxDDD (Babel Tower like), yay!!
First of all I'm going to write a summary of the other posts in english to let you know what this is about, so here we go!
Background
Probably you are wondering about the title's meaning of this blog. Well, I've thinking for a while (actually years) to go abroad to make my life away from home, in another country. Change the atmosphere that surrounds me, new culture, different language and, moreover, changing the way I think and the way I work.
Since I had been borned I lived always in the same place. One day I began to feel the need to move and discover other societies. I really wanted to travel to know more about other places, so I began going abroad to see with my eyes how the things were outside my country, even as a tourist.
It's curious to see how people reacts in a journey. Some can't put up with being far from home (home sickness?), they feel alone or even threatened by everything which is unknown for them. On the other hand, others can only feel awesomeness by each new thing they see. Finally, some people are so travel addicts that a simple tourist travel ends up being a new palce to live for quite a few years.
If I should remember only one travel it would be, without any doubt, Australia. We (Ana and I) went there to study english at ELC and to meet new people from all over the world, and we did!! Now anywhere in this planet doesn't seem to be far enough for us. It wasn't a tourism travel, we went there to live for 6 weeks. As I said, the most important purpose was learning english properly in an english speaking environment. As most people from our generation, we've been studying english since we were seven, but being there is completely different.
We stayed in ELC, an english school in Sydney, for 5 weeks doing "general english". There we met some good people; some of them becoming friends.
Sincerelly, we would be living in Australia now if the budget had been enough to survive some more time there and to find a job. But our fears about the uncertainty beat us; we've a stable job in Barcelona and we hadn't plans if we had stayed there. So we came back home with the idea in our heads (remember the movie "inception"?). It was only a matter of time that this idea grew.
As a result I have a new goal now, study a master degree in the UK for a whole year. In this blog I will tell you how it goes.

El principi del camí ...
Doncs bé, com tots els camins aquest té un principi i un objectiu. Tal com deia en el post anterior de moment l'objectiu és passar un any a Anglaterra estudiant un Màster a la universitat, els objectius següents després d'aquest any quedaran definits una vegada estigui allà.
És clar que un ha de tenir una lleugera idea del tema que vol estudiar i a quina universitat li agradaría anar. En el meu cas m'estic decantant per un MSc en aerodinàmica que es fa a la universistat de Southampton. Sembla ser que té una bona posició en els ránkings d'universitats que es dediquen a enginyeria (QS technical ranking), posició 55 del món. Ja se que no és el MIT però trobo que tampoc està malament i a més any rere any ha anat pujant. Si bé aquest tipus de rànkings no són la veritat absoluta si que estan fets en base a una serie de criteris objectius que els converteixen en una referència significativa.
El primer pas per fer les coses correctament és informar-se i per tant ja vaig estar visitant pàgines web, escrivint e-mails, buscant opininons d'altra gent que hagués fet coses similars i veient la trajectoria que han tingut alguns ex-estudiants després del seu pas per la universitat on tinc intencions d'acabar.
La majoria d'universitats angleses tenen una serie de requisits per tenir la possibilitat de poder-hi entrar. Entre tots ells n'hi ha un de comú: un certificat acreditatiu de nivell d'anglès. Hi ha diferents possibilitats per acreditar el nivell d'idioma, els tipics CAE, CPE o bé l'IELTS
L'IELTS és un examen d'anglès de l'estil del TOEFL americà. No està definit per un nivell en particular si no que intenta donar-te una nota segons el que demostris a l'examen. Diguessim que no és un examen que s'aprovi o es suspengui.
Aquest examen es divideix en quatre parts: listening, reading, writing i speaking.
La universitat de Southampton posa com a requisit tenir un mínim de 6.5 de nota global en el IELTS i un mínim de 6.0 en cada una de les quatre parts.
Em vaig decidir per l'IELTS per diversos motius; no tenia temps per fer el CAE (els evaluadors tarden més de 2 mesos en corregir-lo); l'IELTS té una versió académica específica per entrar a les universitats, cosa que acota l'abast de l'examen; l'IELTS tarden només 15 dies en donar les notes i a més només tardes 3 hores en fer l'examen complet.
Així que amb un "mission statement" (com dirien els dissenyadors de misions espacials) ben clar vaig iniciar la preparació de l'examen.
Aproximadament vaig passar una setmana pel meu compte coneixent l'estructura de l'examen i practicant-ne les parts i dues setmanes adicionals en un curs de preparació del British Council que em va anar molt bé.
Finalment el passat 19 de novembre va arribar la data de l'examen. Primer es fan el listening, reading i writing seguits sense descansos. Després al British Council es fa el speaking.
En principi el reading i el writing eren les parts potencialment problemàtiques perquè el temps està molt ajustat i l'speaking havia de ser la part relaxada. Com no podia ser d'altra manera tot es va girar. Les tres primeres parts van anar perfectes, i l'speaking ...... bueno, se suposa que havia de ser una part que domino però em va tocar parlar sobre un tema sobre el que no tenia gran cosa a dir i llavors va sortir aquella espurna problemàtica que fa que a mesura que avança l'examen les cagades vagin sent més evidents i s'entra en un procés divergent que tendeix a l'expansió infinita.
El fotut del problema és que no em val que la nota total de l'examen sigui molt bona, si no que necesito que en cada part tingui almenys un 6.0. Així que només que l'speaking s'hagi quedat per sota ja no val res de tot això i s'hauria de tornar a repetir sencer. Però vaja, són les regles del joc que he acceptat, no?

Antecedents
És possible que us pregunteu a qué ve el nom d'aquest blog. Doncs bé, ja fa un temps (anys i tot) que em va rondant pel cap la idea d'anarme'n del país per intentar muntar una vida fora d'aquí. Canviar, d'aires, d'ambient, de cultura, d'idioma i sobretot de manera de pensar i treballar.
Desde que vaig neixer que estic en el mateix entorn, la mateixa societat amb els mateixos problemes i per tant la meva forma de veure el món va quedar reduïda a la que la gent del meu entorn em transmitia. Tot i així, tenia aquella inquietud per coneixer més i per això vaig començar a viatjar fora del país; per veure per mi mateix com eren les coses fora d'aquí, encara que fos com a turista. És curiós com reacciona la gent al viatjar. Alguns no soporten estar fora de casa, se senten ameçats per tot allò que no coneixen i volen tornar al seu "gueto" particular tan aviat com puguin; d'altres es queden impresionats per tot allò nou que veuen i agafen una inercia de viatger imparable. N'hi ha alguns que es tornen tant adictes a viatjar que casi passen a ser nòmades, mentre que d'altres transformen una visita de vacances en el seu lloc per viure.
En el meu cas vaig començar com a guiri entusiasmat amb la meva noia, l'Ana. Encara que ja havia estat a d'altres paísos abans sempre havia sigut amb profesors de l'institut, mai sol davant allò desconegut. El primer viatge realment en solitari a un alre país amb l'Ana va ser a Praga; ningú ens deia el que havíem de fer, ningú ens posava restriccions de cap tipus. Ho decidíem nosaltres, era la nostra llibertat en un lloc desconegut. Desde llavors hem continuat viatjant pel món; França, Mèxic, Regne Unit, República Dominicana, Australia i pròximament Thailandia.
Si hi ha hagut un viatge especial, a part del primer, ha estat Australia. Ara ja res ens sembla que estigui lluny mentre estigui en aquest planeta. El motiu pel qual la nostra estada a Sydney va ser diferent és bàsicament perqué no anàvem a fer turisme, anàvem a viure allà durant 6 setmanes. La qüestió era menjar on la gent d'allà menja, fer el que la gent d'allà fa i coneixer molta altra gent de diferents llocs del planeta; i així va ser. Un altre objectiu important era apendre l'idioma correctament en un entorn de parla anglesa. Desde petits hem estat estudiant anglès com gairebé tothom de la nostra generació, però no és el mateix estar allà. Durant 5 setmanes vam estar a ELC, una acadèmia de Sydney fent "general english". Hi vam coneixer molts personatges dels quals alguns van acabar sent amics durant la nostra estada. Tal i com era la nostra intenció vam intercanviar coneixements amb Aussies, Kiwis, Suïssos, Francesos, Brasilers, Japonesos, Alemanys, Americans, etc. i vam veure les diferencies en el comportament de la societat respecte a nosaltres.

Evidentment hi ha de tot, però en termes generals sorpren el tan conegut "civisme" que aquí tothom té en boca però que no tenim gaire idea del que és. A Sydney la gent sol ser força respectuosa i s'ofereix per ajudar sempre que poden. Un exemple clar que ens comentava un dels múltiples Espanyols que ens vam trobar per allà: "El primer día que va arribar a la ciutat estava totalment perdut pel carrer amb un mapa mirant de trobar un lloc en concret. Una dona es va parar i li va preguntar si necessitava ajuda. No només li va indicar per on havia d'anar si no que a més, tot i tenir el temps just, el va acompanyar fins al lloc". Algú s'imagina això mateix a Barcelona? jajajaja ni de conya. Evidentment algún borde et trobaves, n'hi ha a tot arreu.
Sincerament, ens hauríem quedat a Australia si el presupost ens ho hagués permés per mirar de trobar feina i quedar-nos un temps més. Però la por a la incertesa ens va poder; tenim feina estable a Barcelona i no teníem res planificat si ens quedàvem allà. Així que vam tornar cap a Barcelona però ja teníem la idea plantada en el cap ("inception" tal com la pel·lícula), només era qüestió de temps que creixés i acabés guanyant la batalla.
Per la meva part ja he començat amb la batalla del canvi, un camí llaaaaaarg com ell sol. Desde que vam tornar d'Australia el març passat he acumulat prous diners com per portar a terme el que molta gent d'aquesta societat titllaría de bojeria en el context actual. Marxar durant un any a Anglaterra per ampliar estudis i intentar establir-me, i en aquest blog la historia serà relatada.
